Concrete in its most basic form was used by the ancient Nabataea traders who were more popularly known as Bedouins more than 8500 years ago. They populated what is now known as modern-day southern Syria and northern Jordan. These ancient people were the first to build structures using this material.
Concrete and cement what is the difference? cement is a naturally occurring deposit that is formed when there is a reaction between limestone and oil shale and is produced by the spontaneous combustion of the two.
Concrete on the other hand is a modern mix of materials that is specific to the tasks it is meant for whether it be for such as for resisting downward pressure, or in the case of a garage the heaving pressure from the soil!
the precursor to modern concrete was invented by Middle Eastern builders in approx 1300 BC and as with all great discoveries it was by chance when they coated the outside of their clay walls with a coat of locally available burned limestone the walls became very hard. These guys probably did not know what they discovered but for them, it meant that they did not have to upkeep their walls as often anymore so they had time for other laborious work.
Modern cement or Portland cement, as it is known, can be traced back to an Englishman named Joeph Aspdin who in 1824 invented the stuff we call Portland cement by burning finely ground chalk and clay until he got what is now referred to as Portland cement. Why the name "Portland" you say well the finished powder color looked like the stones that were from Portland england of course.
